Painting Memories. Vivid Caribbean Nostalgia

The Center had special demonstration from Haitian artist Sophia Lacroix on how to paint your own portraiture and still-lifes inspired by Haitian art! Craft your very own living portrait or recreate the splendor of her meticulously crafted still-life compositions.

Self-taught, Sophia Lacroix migrated to the United States at the age of 15. Now, Lacroix creates oil paintings that depict everyday scenes with the tender nostalgia of her cherished memories from Haiti. She utilizes woven baskets and sunhats with native produce from Haiti to serve as symbolic reminders.

Patrons learned about Lacroix's Haitian heritage and how it inspires the figures and settings she depicts and draw inspiration from the still-lifes and portraits depicted in the exhibition, Sophia Lacroix: Vivid Caribbean Nostalgia.

Everyone enjoyed crafting their very own living portrait or recreating the splendor of her meticulously crafted still-life compositions.
